![]() ![]() Steve Jobs in Aaron Sorkin’s “Jobs,” is another example. ![]() But she was still able to exist in reality. That character was talkative and opinionated, slightly larger than life. I mean there’s something about your character’s personality that’s bigger than the average person. Now when I say, “larger than life,” I don’t mean Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids. So my first piece of advice to you when it comes to character and dialogue is to create a character who’s larger than life in some way. ![]() Think about it, how many average characters do you remember in all of the movies you’ve seen who spit out memorable dialogue? I’m guessing none. You could argue that unless you’re constructing some of your characters with the larger-than-life gene, you’re dooming your screenplay to bad dialogue. How important is character creation when it comes to dialogue? Well, you know that guy Quentin Tarantino? The screenwriter who many believe writes the best dialogue in town? All Tarantino does is he creates a series of larger-than-life characters and simply lets them talk. Today we’re going to go back even further than that and talk about how to create characters that lead to good dialogue. Shadow and Fyfe are sure to win the hearts of anyone lucky enough to join in their inspirational story.Last week we talked about how to set up a scene in order to create the best dialogue. Shadow of a Doubt is a heartfelt book about family, friendship, taking risks and believing in those we love. But Fyfe and Shadow, with the help of their animal friends, refuse to give up on their dreams. At first, few believe in Shadow's prospects-especially when the neighbor next door, Colonel Epsom, uses his great wealth to produce racehorses of the finest caliber and will do whatever it takes to see them win. When a new foal is born but loses his mother, Fyfe gains a loyal best friend in the horse she names "Shadow of a Doubt." Together they dream that one day Shadow will become a great racehorse and win the Kentucky Derby. That suits her father, the acclaimed jockey Roscoe Flynn, just fine. Fyfe Flynn lives on a modest farm in the shadows of the world-famous horse track Churchill Downs, where she spends more time around horses than she does around other kids. ![]()
